Product Details

MCP79400-I/SN - Battery-Backed I²C Real-Time Clock/Calendar with SRAM and Protected EEPROM
MCP79400-I/SN is a battery-backed real-time clock/calendar (RTCC) from Microchip Technology. It provides reliable timekeeping, dual programmable alarms, a multifunction open-drain output (MFP), 64-byte battery-backed SRAM, and a 64-bit protected EEPROM designed to prevent unintended writes. The device supports an external 32.768 kHz crystal and includes on-chip digital trimming for calibration.

P
Product Introduction

The MCP79400 is a low-power I²C RTCC that tracks seconds, minutes, hours, day-of-week, date, month, and year, with leap-year compensation up to year 2399 and selectable 12/24-hour formats. It is designed for embedded systems that require reliable real-time clock functionality and event logging.

The device features automatic switchover to battery backup. When the primary supply is removed and a backup source is present, timekeeping and SRAM contents are preserved, and the transition events are recorded using a power-fail timestamp. The on-chip protected EEPROM (8 bytes) requires a specific unlock sequence, helping safeguard critical data.

Variant note: MCP79400 provides an unprogrammed protected EEPROM. MCP79401 and MCP79402 variants include factory-programmed EUI-48™ and EUI-64™ identifiers respectively.

K
Key Benefits
Battery-backed timekeeping with power-fail timestamp

Maintains accurate time during power interruptions and logs power-loss and restore events.

Protected EEPROM for critical data

64-bit EEPROM requires a defined unlock sequence before writing, reducing unintended updates.

Low-power operation over wide voltage range

Operates from 1.8V to 5.5V with backup supply support from 1.3V to 5.5V.

Flexible alarms and multifunction output

Dual alarms and an MFP pin configurable as alarm output, clock output, or general-purpose output.

F
Features
I²C compatible serial interface

Supports standard 2-wire communications up to 400 kHz under specified voltage conditions.

32.768 kHz crystal oscillator with digital trimming

Optimized for 6–9 pF tuning fork crystals with on-chip calibration (±1 ppm resolution, ±129 ppm range).

64-byte SRAM and protected EEPROM

Battery-backed SRAM for data retention and EEPROM for storing essential configuration information.

Industrial temperature range

Supports operation from -40°C to +85°C for industrial and embedded applications.

EEPROM write protection mechanism

Protected EEPROM writes require a defined unlock sequence, helping prevent corruption during brown-out or reset events.

P
Package

MCP79400-I/SN denotes the Industrial temperature grade supplied in an SN package, which is an 8-lead SOIC (3.90 mm body) surface-mount package. Always verify land pattern and mechanical dimensions using the official Microchip package drawing.

P
Pinout

The SOIC-8 pinout integrates crystal connections, I²C interface pins, a backup supply input, and a multifunction output for alarm or clock signaling.

  • X1 / X2: 32.768 kHz crystal connections
  • VBAT: Backup battery supply input
  • VSS: Ground
  • VCC: Main power supply
  • MFP: Multifunction open-drain output
  • SCL: I²C serial clock
  • SDA: I²C serial data
