MAX5921EESA+ - Maxim MAX5921 -48 V Hot-Swap Controller, External RSENSE, 450 mA Gate Pulldown, OV/UV Protection, 8-Pin SO | MAX5921
MAX5921EESA+ is the lead-free 8-pin SO version of Maxim's MAX5921, a -48 V hot-swap controller that lets a circuit card be safely inserted into and removed from a live -48 V backplane. It drives an external N-channel MOSFET through an external RSENSE current path with a strong 450 mA gate pulldown for fast turn-off during a short, controls inrush with a programmable current limit, and operates over a wide -20 V to -80 V range. With programmable overvoltage and undervoltage protection, an overcurrent fault integrator, power-good output and thermal shutdown - and pin-for-pin compatibility with the LT1640/LT4250 - it suits telecom, network, central-office, server and base-station line cards.
Product Introduction
The MAX5921/MAX5939 from Maxim Integrated (now part of Analog Devices) solve the problem every -48 V telecom shelf faces: how to plug a card into a live backplane without the inrush current arcing the connector or browning out the supply. The MAX5921 is a controlled turn-on hot-swap controller - it ramps an external N-channel MOSFET on gently, holding the inrush within a programmed limit while the load's bulk capacitance charges. MAX5921EESA+ is the RoHS ("+") option in the 8-pin SO; the part is a drop-in for the industry-standard LT1640/LT4250.
The current path is built around an external RSENSE, which the designer sizes for the card's current, and the controller watches the voltage across it through the SENSE pin. Two limits act on it: a programmable inrush/circuit-breaker level for normal turn-on, and a fast short-circuit response that slams the GATE down with 450 mA of pulldown current - the high pulldown is what gets a big MOSFET off quickly when the load shorts, before the device or the connector is damaged. An overcurrent fault integrator distinguishes a real fault from a momentary spike, and the part withstands -100 V input transients with no external components.
Supervision rounds it out. Programmable overvoltage (OV) and undervoltage (UV) comparators, each with a built-in glitch filter, keep the card off until the -48 V rail is in range; an open-drain PWRGD̅ output tells the system the card is powered and in regulation; and a thermal-shutdown circuit protects the external MOSFET. The MAX5921 operates from -20 V to -80 V over the extended -40 °C to +85 °C range, with the input steps and spikes of a real backplane designed into its immunity.
Expert Technical Insight
How is the hot-swap stage designed, and where does it need care?
- Size RSENSE and the GATE ramp together: RSENSE sets the current-limit threshold, and the GATE charge current sets the inrush dV/dt into the load capacitance. Pick RSENSE for the steady current and the breaker point, then verify the turn-on SOA of the external MOSFET against the inrush - the controller limits current, but the FET dissipates the ramp energy.
- The 450 mA pulldown is a safety margin, not a luxury: a -48 V short pushes huge current; the strong pulldown turns a large gate-capacitance MOSFET off in time. Keep the GATE and SENSE traces short and Kelvin-connect SENSE across RSENSE so the fast comparator sees the true drop, not trace IR.
- Set OV/UV and read the fault integrator: program the UV/OV thresholds so the card only powers between valid backplane voltages, and understand the overcurrent integrator timing - it rides through legitimate spikes but latches on a sustained fault, which is exactly what protects the MOSFET. PWRGD̅ is open-drain; give it a pull-up to the logic rail.
Key Benefits
Controlled turn-on ramps an external MOSFET to hold inrush within a programmed limit, so a card plugs into a live -48 V backplane without arcing or browning out the supply.
A strong 450 mA gate pulldown turns a large MOSFET off fast on a short circuit - the margin that protects the FET and the connector.
Programmable overvoltage and undervoltage with glitch filters, plus an overcurrent fault integrator that rides spikes but latches on a real fault.
Withstands -100 V input transients with no external parts, operates -20 V to -80 V, and is pin-for-pin compatible with the LT1640/LT4250.

Package Information
MAX5921EESA+ ships in the 8-pin SO (0.150-inch narrow SOIC, package outline 21-0041) - the standard small-outline body that sits next to the external MOSFET and RSENSE on a -48 V line card. The controller handles only gate-drive and sense signals; the load current flows in the external MOSFET and sense resistor, so layout is the design: Kelvin-connect SENSE across RSENSE, keep the GATE trace short to the MOSFET, route the high-voltage VEE/DRAIN nodes with adequate clearance, and bypass VDD at the pin. The dimensional drawing below gives the full mechanical detail.
Pin and Signal Definition
The 8-pin SO groups the supervisory inputs on one side and the MOSFET drive/sense on the other (per the MAX5921/MAX5939 datasheet):
- Pin 1 - PWRGD̅: Power-good output (open-drain); asserts when the card is powered and in regulation.
- Pin 2 - OV: Overvoltage programming input; sets the upper backplane-voltage threshold.
- Pin 3 - UV: Undervoltage programming input; sets the lower threshold (card stays off below it).
- Pin 4 - VEE: Negative supply (-48 V return / most-negative rail).
- Pin 5 - SENSE: Current-sense input; Kelvin-connect across the external RSENSE.
- Pin 6 - GATE: Gate drive for the external N-channel MOSFET; 450 mA pulldown.
- Pin 7 - DRAIN: MOSFET drain-sense / output monitor input.
- Pin 8 - VDD: Positive supply for the controller; bypass to VEE.

Selection Tips: Stay with the MAX5921 for a controlled-turn-on -48 V hot-swap with external RSENSE and high gate pulldown in 8-SO, and as a drop-in for the LT1640/LT4250. Step to the MAX5939 family companion or the MAX5910 for related -48 V designs, or the integrated MAX5950/MAX5957/MAX5978 when a higher-integration power-management controller fits the system better.
Manufacturer Information
Maxim Integrated, now part of Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI), built the MAX5921/MAX5939 for the -48 V telecom and datacom infrastructure where cards are inserted and removed live - giving designers a drop-in for the established LT1640/LT4250 with the high gate pulldown and transient immunity those rugged backplanes demand.
ADI maintains the datasheet, the RSENSE and timing-component selection guidance, and the MOSFET SOA application notes for the family - the documentation that turns the external sense resistor and MOSFET into a safe, repeatable hot-swap on a live -48 V shelf.
Applications

Frequently Asked Questions
What does MAX5921EESA+ do?
It is a -48 V hot-swap controller. It lets a circuit card be inserted into and removed from a live -48 V backplane by ramping an external N-channel MOSFET on in a controlled way, holding inrush within a programmed limit, and protecting against shorts, overvoltage and undervoltage. It is a drop-in for the LT1640/LT4250.
Why the 450 mA gate pulldown?
On a -48 V short the current is very large, so the external MOSFET must turn off fast. The strong 450 mA gate pulldown discharges a large gate capacitance quickly, getting the FET off before it or the connector is damaged.
How is the current limit set?
With an external RSENSE: the controller senses the voltage across it (Kelvin-connected to the SENSE pin) and compares it to programmable inrush and short-circuit thresholds. An overcurrent fault integrator rides through momentary spikes but latches on a sustained fault.
What voltage range and package?
It operates from -20 V to -80 V and withstands -100 V input transients with no external components, in an 8-pin SO (outline 21-0041), rated -40 °C to +85 °C. It is pin-for-pin compatible with the LT1640/LT4250.
