VL-2020/HFN - Panasonic 20.0mAh 3.0V Coin-type Vanadium Rechargeable Lithium Battery (horizontal PCB pins)
VL-2020/HFN from Panasonic Energy is a 20.0mAh, 3.0V VL-series rechargeable vanadium-lithium coin cell with horizontal PCB pins. It is intended for RTC, memory-backup and low-drain backup circuits that need a rechargeable coin cell rather than a primary CR cell.
What it is
The VL-2020/HFN is based on Panasonic's VL rechargeable lithium chemistry, using a vanadium oxide positive electrode and a lithium-alloy negative electrode. It is not a drop-in substitute for a non-rechargeable CR coin cell: the circuit must provide controlled charging within Panasonic's specified voltage window.
This part is useful where a board has an always-available charging rail and needs to keep a real-time clock, SRAM, configuration memory or small backup domain alive during main-power interruptions. The 20.0mm coin profile keeps the backup supply compact while the solder-tab termination gives a stable board connection.
The HFN horizontal PCB-pin version should be selected from the mechanical constraints of the PCB. Electrical ratings are shared by the same cell size; the suffix mainly changes the tab orientation and how the cell stands on the board.
Why designers use it
VL-2020/HFN provides a rechargeable backup source where the host board can maintain the cell inside Panasonic's charge-voltage window.
The capacity, drain current and cycle guidance are taken from the Panasonic VL2020 datasheet, not inferred from a generic coin-cell family.
Use this suffix when the PCB layout needs the hfn horizontal pcb-pin tab orientation.

Charging guidance
Use a constant-voltage charging method and keep the charging voltage at 3.25V to 3.55V. Panasonic explicitly warns against trickle charging; over-voltage can raise internal resistance or cause deterioration, while under-voltage prevents full recovery.

FAQ
Can VL-2020/HFN replace a CR2020 primary coin cell?
No. It is rechargeable and must be used only in a circuit designed for VL-series charging. A primary CR cell circuit normally does not provide the required charge control.
What is the correct charge voltage?
Panasonic specifies 3.25V to 3.55V for VL2020 and VL2330 cells, with constant-voltage charging.
What is the difference between HFN and VCN?
HFN is the horizontal PCB-pin version and VCN is the vertical PCB-pin version. The cell chemistry and nominal electrical rating follow the same VL cell size.
What cutoff is used for the capacity rating?
The nominal capacity is based on a standard drain down to 2.5V at 20°C, according to Panasonic's datasheet note.
