MAX7044AKA+T - Maxim MAX7044 300MHz-450MHz Crystal-Based +13dBm ASK/OOK Transmitter, 8-Pin SOT23 | MAX7044
MAX7044AKA+T is the lead-free, tape-and-reel 8-pin SOT23 version of Maxim's MAX7044, a crystal-referenced PLL VHF/UHF transmitter that sends OOK/ASK data across the 300 MHz to 450 MHz band. It delivers up to +13 dBm into a 50 Ω load at data rates to 100 kbps, while drawing only 7.7 mA at 2.7 V from a +2.1 V to +3.6 V supply. The crystal-based architecture avoids the drawbacks of SAW transmitters - giving deeper modulation, faster settling and tighter frequency tolerance - in a tiny 3 mm x 3 mm SOT23 for remote keyless entry, tire-pressure monitoring, security systems and wireless sensors.
Product Introduction
The MAX7044 from Maxim Integrated (now part of Analog Devices) is a low-cost crystal-referenced phase-locked-loop (PLL) VHF/UHF transmitter designed to transmit OOK/ASK data in the 300 MHz to 450 MHz frequency range - the ISM bands used by most short-range remote and sensor links. MAX7044AKA+T is the RoHS ("+"), tape-and-reel ("T") 8-pin SOT23 option.
Its defining feature is the crystal-based architecture. Where a SAW-based transmitter suffers from shallow modulation depth, slow frequency settling, loose transmit-frequency tolerance and temperature drift, the MAX7044 references a small, low-cost crystal through an on-chip PLL. This gives greater modulation depth, faster frequency settling, much tighter transmit-frequency tolerance and reduced temperature dependence - so the receiver can use a narrower bandwidth and recover more range from the same power.
The MAX7044 delivers up to +13 dBm output into a 50 Ω load and supports data rates to 100 kbps, yet draws only 7.7 mA at 2.7 V (50% duty cycle). A fast-on oscillator reaches operation in about 250 µs, which matters for the burst, duty-cycled transmissions typical of battery RKE fobs and sensors. It runs from a single +2.1 V to +3.6 V supply over -40 °C to +125 °C in the 3 mm x 3 mm 8-pin SOT23.
Expert Technical Insight
Why crystal-based, and how to drive it:
- Crystal beats SAW for range and reliability: the tight, temperature-stable transmit frequency lets the receiver run a narrow IF bandwidth - rejecting more noise and extending range. A SAW link has to open its bandwidth to cope with frequency drift, costing sensitivity. Pick the crystal so that f_XTAL x N lands on your target RF channel.
- Drive DATA with your encoded bitstream: OOK/ASK is keyed on the DATA pin; the PA output (PAOUT) feeds a matching network into the 50 Ω antenna. Use the CLKOUT pin to clock the encoder/µC so the data is synchronous with the carrier reference.
- Exploit the 250 µs fast-on and 7.7 mA: for battery RKE and TPM, power the part only during the transmit burst - the fast oscillator start-up keeps the average current tiny. Size the PA match for +13 dBm into 50 Ω and keep PAGND/GND returns short for clean output spectrum.
Key Benefits
OOK/ASK transmit across 300-450 MHz with up to +13 dBm into a 50 Ω load, data rates to 100 kbps.
Crystal reference gives deeper modulation, faster settling, tighter frequency tolerance and less temperature drift than SAW.
Only 7.7 mA at 2.7 V, +2.1 to +3.6 V single supply, 250 µs oscillator start-up for duty-cycled bursts.
3 mm x 3 mm 8-pin SOT23 - fits compact key fobs, tags and sensor nodes.

Package Information
MAX7044AKA+T ships in the tiny 8-pin SOT23 (3 mm x 3 mm) - small enough for a key fob, a tire-pressure sensor module or a compact sensor node, where board area and height are at a premium. Keep the PAOUT matching network compact and the PAGND/GND returns short for a clean output spectrum, and place the crystal close to XTAL1/XTAL2. The package is shown below.
Pin and Signal Definition
The 8-pin SOT23 carries the crystal, supply, power-amplifier and data pins (per the MAX7044 datasheet):
- Pin 1 - XTAL1: Crystal connection 1 (reference oscillator).
- Pin 2 - VDD: Supply input, +2.1 V to +3.6 V; bypass to GND.
- Pin 3 - PAGND: Power-amplifier ground (keep this return short).
- Pin 4 - PAOUT: Power-amplifier output to the 50 Ω antenna matching network.
- Pin 5 - CLKOUT: Buffered clock output to clock the encoder / microcontroller.
- Pin 6 - DATA: OOK/ASK data input (the modulating bitstream).
- Pin 7 - XTAL2: Crystal connection 2.
- Pin 8 - GND: Ground.

Selection Tips: Choose the MAX7044 for a rugged, crystal-referenced +13 dBm OOK/ASK transmitter at 300-450 MHz. Pair it with the MAX604 (supply), MAX6071 (reference), MAX705 (MCU supervision) and MAX6816 (debounced button input) to complete a battery wireless-remote or sensor node.
Manufacturer Information
Maxim Integrated, now part of Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI), designed the MAX7044 to give short-range OOK/ASK links the stability of a crystal reference instead of a SAW resonator - deeper modulation, tighter frequency and better temperature behavior in a SOT23.
ADI maintains the datasheet, the PLL/crystal and PA-matching application guidance, and the regulatory (ISM-band) notes for the family - the basis for a reliable 300-450 MHz transmitter design.
Applications

Frequently Asked Questions
What does MAX7044AKA+T do?
It is a crystal-referenced PLL transmitter that sends OOK/ASK data across 300-450 MHz, delivering up to +13 dBm into a 50 Ω load at data rates to 100 kbps, from a +2.1 to +3.6 V supply at 7.7 mA. It is the 8-pin SOT23 version.
Why is crystal-based better than SAW?
A crystal reference gives much tighter, more temperature-stable transmit frequency plus deeper modulation and faster settling than a SAW resonator. That lets the receiver use a narrower bandwidth - rejecting noise and extending range - and avoids the drift that forces SAW links to widen their bandwidth.
How is the data modulated?
OOK/ASK is keyed on the DATA pin (pin 6): your encoded bitstream switches the carrier on/off. The carrier comes from a crystal on XTAL1/XTAL2 multiplied by the on-chip PLL, and the power amplifier drives PAOUT (pin 4) into a 50 Ω antenna match. CLKOUT can clock your encoder.
Is it suitable for battery devices?
Yes. It draws only 7.7 mA at 2.7 V and the oscillator starts in about 250 µs, so a battery RKE fob or sensor can power it only during the transmit burst, keeping average current very low - ideal for coin-cell key fobs and duty-cycled sensors.
