MAX705CSA+T - Maxim MAX705 Low-Cost µP Supervisor, 4.65 V Reset, Watchdog, Power-Fail Comparator, Manual Reset, 8-Pin SO | MAX705
MAX705CSA+T is the lead-free, tape-and-reel 8-pin SO version of Maxim's MAX705, a low-cost microprocessor (µP) supervisory circuit that bundles four functions a µP system needs. It provides a 4.65 V reset (active-low RESET̅) on power-up, power-down and brownout; a 1.6 s watchdog timer (WDI/WDO̅); an independent 1.25 V power-fail comparator (PFI/PFO̅) for early warning; and a debounced active-low manual-reset input (MR̅). RESET̅ stays valid down to VCC = 1 V. In an 8-pin SO, it suits computers, controllers, intelligent instruments and critical µP power monitoring.
Product Introduction
The MAX705-MAX708/MAX813L from Maxim Integrated (now part of Analog Devices) are low-cost µP supervisory circuits that combine the housekeeping functions a processor board would otherwise build from discrete parts. The MAX705 integrates four: a reset generator, a watchdog timer, a power-fail comparator, and a manual-reset input. MAX705CSA+T is the RoHS ("+"), tape-and-reel ("T") 8-pin SO option; within the family the part code sets the reset threshold and RESET polarity (the MAX705 is the 4.65 V, active-low RESET̅ version).
The reset function holds the µP in a known state whenever the supply is invalid. The MAX705 monitors VCC against a precision 4.65 V threshold and asserts RESET̅ on power-up, power-down or a brownout, holding it for a guaranteed 200 ms after VCC recovers - and crucially, RESET̅ is guaranteed valid down to VCC = 1 V, so the processor is held even as the rail collapses. A debounced manual-reset input (MR̅) lets a button force a clean reset.
The other two functions guard against software and supply failures. The watchdog timer expects the µP to toggle WDI within 1.6 s; if the software hangs, WDO̅ asserts. The independent power-fail comparator compares PFI to a 1.25 V reference and drives PFO̅ - typically used to sense the unregulated input through a divider for an early "power is failing" interrupt before the regulated rail drops. The MAX705 operates over the commercial 0 °C to +70 °C range in the 8-pin SO.
Expert Technical Insight
How are the four functions wired, and what should the designer mind?
- Use the power-fail comparator for early warning: divide the unregulated supply into PFI so PFO̅ trips before the regulator drops out - giving firmware milliseconds to save state. The comparator is independent of the reset, so it works as a free low-battery or brownout-warning detector.
- Service WDI from clean code: toggle WDI in the main loop, not an ISR, so a stuck loop still trips the 1.6 s watchdog and WDO̅ resets the µP. If the watchdog is not used, the input can be left per the datasheet so it does not false-trip.
- RESET̅ to 1 V is the key spec: the active-low RESET̅ stays asserted down to VCC = 1 V, so it holds the µP through a complete power-down - unlike a simple comparator that goes indeterminate at low rails. Add the MR̅ button with the internal debounce in mind, and pick the family member whose threshold/polarity matches the processor.
Key Benefits
Precision 4.65 V reset with active-low RESET̅ held 200 ms after recovery, and guaranteed valid down to VCC = 1 V.
A watchdog timer asserts WDO̅ if the µP fails to toggle WDI within 1.6 s - automatic recovery from a software hang.
An independent 1.25 V comparator (PFI/PFO̅) gives early power-fail or low-battery warning before the regulated rail drops.
A debounced active-low manual-reset input (MR̅), all four functions in a single 8-pin SO.

Package Information
MAX705CSA+T ships in the 8-pin SO (0.150-inch narrow SOIC, package outline 21-0041) - the small body that puts a four-function supervisor next to the processor. The layout is straightforward: route RESET̅ to the µP reset, WDI from a clean point in the main loop and WDO̅ back to reset/interrupt, divide the monitored rail into PFI with PFO̅ to an interrupt, add the MR̅ button, and bypass VCC. The dimensional drawing below gives the full mechanical detail.
Pin and Signal Definition
The 8-pin SO carries the manual reset, supply, the watchdog and power-fail pins, and the reset output (per the MAX705 datasheet):
- Pin 1 - MR̅: Manual-reset input (active-low, debounced).
- Pin 2 - VCC: Supply input (monitored against 4.65 V).
- Pin 3 - GND: Ground.
- Pin 4 - PFI: Power-fail comparator input (compared to 1.25 V).
- Pin 5 - PFO̅: Power-fail comparator output.
- Pin 6 - WDI: Watchdog input; toggle within 1.6 s.
- Pin 7 - RESET̅: Active-low reset output; valid to VCC = 1 V.
- Pin 8 - WDO̅: Watchdog output; asserts on watchdog timeout.
Alternative and Related Parts
Within the MAX705-MAX708/MAX813L family the variants differ by reset threshold and polarity: the MAX706 drops the watchdog, the MAX707/MAX708 use a 4.40 V threshold and active-high RESET, and the MAX708 adds the power-fail comparator. Related supervisory and power parts are below.
| Part Number | Brand | Type / Relation | Package | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MAX6368LKA29+T | Maxim | µP supervisor, battery backup | 8-SOT23 | Reset + CE gating |
| MAX6369KA+T | Maxim | Pin-selectable watchdog timer | 8-SOT23 | Watchdog alternative |
| MAX604CSA+T | Maxim | 3.3 V LDO regulator | 8-SO | Logic supply |
| MAX6816EUS+T | Maxim | Switch debouncer | 4-SOT143 | Clean switch input |

Selection Tips: Choose the MAX705 for a 4.65 V, active-low-reset supervisor with watchdog, power-fail comparator and manual reset. Step to the MAX706 (no watchdog), the MAX707/MAX708 (4.40 V, active-high RESET) or the MAX813L per the threshold and polarity your processor needs. The MAX6368/MAX6369 are SOT23 supervisor/watchdog alternatives.
Manufacturer Information
Maxim Integrated, now part of Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI), created the MAX705-MAX708/MAX813L to put a processor's reset, watchdog, power-fail and manual-reset housekeeping into one low-cost SO - replacing a handful of discrete comparators and timers.
ADI maintains the datasheet, the threshold/polarity option table and the watchdog and power-fail application guidance for the family - the basis for a reliable µP-supervision design.
Applications

Frequently Asked Questions
What does MAX705CSA+T do?
It is a four-function µP supervisor: a 4.65 V reset (active-low RESET̅, valid to VCC = 1 V), a 1.6 s watchdog (WDI/WDO̅), an independent 1.25 V power-fail comparator (PFI/PFO̅), and a debounced manual-reset input (MR̅) - all in an 8-pin SO.
What is the power-fail comparator for?
It gives early warning. Divide the unregulated input into PFI; when it falls below the 1.25 V reference, PFO̅ asserts - typically before the regulated rail drops - so firmware can save state. It is independent of the reset, so it doubles as a low-battery detector.
How does it differ from the MAX706/707/708?
All are in the same family. The MAX705 has a 4.65 V threshold and active-low RESET̅ with watchdog; the MAX706 drops the watchdog; the MAX707/MAX708 use 4.40 V and active-high RESET; the MAX708 adds the power-fail comparator. Choose by threshold, RESET polarity and whether you need the watchdog.
Why does RESET valid to 1 V matter?
RESET̅ is guaranteed asserted down to VCC = 1 V, so it holds the processor in reset through a complete power-down - a simple comparator would go indeterminate at a low rail and could release the µP into an undefined state.
