LAN8720A-CP-TR is a highly integrated 10/100M Ethernet Physical Layer (PHY) transceiver from Microchip in an ultra-compact QFN-24 package (3x3mm), with built-in 50MHz clock oscillator and voltage regulator - one of the smallest Ethernet PHYs with built-in clock on the market.

The chip is default-configured for RMII interface, requiring only 7 pins to connect to MAC controllers (TXD[0:1], RXD[0:1], REFCLK, CRS_DV, TXEN), greatly simplifying wiring and saving microcontroller pin resources. HP Auto-MDI/X automatically handles cable polarity - no manual distinction needed.

LAN8720A is fully IEEE 802.3/802.3u compliant with EEE (Energy Efficient Ethernet) low-power protocol, power consumption below 315mW, operating temperature range -40C~+85C - widely used in industrial IoT, smart home and communication terminals.

LAN8720A-CP-TR uses QFN-24 package (Quad Flat No-Lead, 3x3mm) with exposed thermal pad on the bottom. Compared to LAN8710A's QFN-32 package, LAN8720A reduces 8 pins while maintaining core functionality, achieving smaller footprint. QFN-24 package has gull-wing pins arranged on inner sides with large bottom pad for ground and thermal dissipation.

PCB layout recommendation: bottom pad must be well-grounded with thermal via arrays connecting to PCB ground plane. Differential traces with 100Ω differential impedance control; RX+/RX- and TX+/TX- traces surrounded by ground fill for isolation.

  • TX+/TX-: Transmit Differential Pair:Connect to transmit side of network transformer. Differential output; series resistors (22~33Ω) near chip recommended to reduce EMI.
  • RX+/RX-: Receive Differential Pair:Connect to receive side of network transformer. On-chip termination - no external resistors needed.
  • REFCLK (Pin 4): Reference Clock:50MHz bidirectional clock. When MODE[2:0]=010, chip outputs 50MHz clock for MAC use; acts as input otherwise.
  • RXD[0:1] (RMII mode): Receive Data:RMII interface receive data, connecting to MAC controller RXD pins (2-bit data).
  • TXD[0:1] (RMII mode): Transmit Data:RMII interface transmit data, connecting to MAC controller TXD pins (2-bit data).
