LT1936EMS8E#PBF - ADI/Linear LT1936 36V 1.4A 500kHz Step-Down DC/DC Regulator, 8-MSOP | LT1936
LT1936EMS8E#PBF is the lead-free, 8-lead MSOP (MS8E, exposed pad) version of the ADI/Linear LT1936 monolithic step-down (buck) DC/DC regulator. It takes a wide 3.6 V to 36 V input and delivers up to 1.4 A at a fixed 500 kHz switching frequency, with the power switch and current-mode control on-chip, output adjustable down to 1.2 V. Cycle-by-cycle current limit, thermal shutdown and a low-current shutdown make it suited to automotive battery regulation, industrial control supplies and unregulated wall adapters.
Product Introduction
The LT1936 from Analog Devices (originally Linear Technology) is a monolithic step-down switching regulator - a current-mode buck converter with the power switch built in. It steps a higher input rail down to a regulated lower output, handling up to 1.4 A of output current. LT1936EMS8E#PBF is the 8-lead MSOP with exposed pad (MS8E), lead-free version.
It accepts a wide input of 3.6 V to 36 V, switching at a fixed 500 kHz that keeps external inductor and capacitor small while staying above the AM band. Current-mode control with cycle-by-cycle current limit gives fast transient response and simple loop compensation. The output is set by an external resistor divider on the feedback pin, adjustable down to the 1.2 V reference, and the part reaches efficiencies above 90% at typical 3.3 V/5 V outputs.
The boost pin and internal switch drive the external catch diode and inductor; the SHDN pin gives a low-current (sub-µA) shutdown, and the device includes soft-start, cycle-by-cycle current limit and thermal shutdown. The exposed pad (EP) under the MSOP package is the ground connection and the main thermal path, and must be soldered to the board. The LT1936 suits compact 24 V industrial and automotive point-of-load supplies.
Expert Technical Insight
How do you design around the LT1936?
- Set the output with the FB divider: the feedback regulates to the 1.2 V reference; pick the top/bottom resistors for your target output, and place them close to the FB pin to keep the node quiet.
- Mind the BOOST and SW loop: the boost capacitor and catch diode form a fast-switching loop with SW - keep it tight and short to control EMI, and choose the inductor for 500 kHz and the 1.4 A rating.
- Solder the exposed pad: EP is GND and the thermal path - solder it to a copper pour with vias, or the part will run hot at high VIN-VOUT drops.
Key Benefits
Monolithic buck takes up to 36 V - ideal for 24 V industrial and automotive rails.
Up to 1.4 A output at a fixed 500 kHz; small external inductor and capacitors.
Current-mode control, output adjustable down to the 1.2 V reference, >90% efficiency.
Cycle-by-cycle limit, thermal shutdown, soft-start; 8-MSOP with thermal exposed pad.

Package Information
LT1936EMS8E#PBF is supplied in the 8-lead MSOP with exposed pad (MS8E); "#PBF" marks the RoHS-compliant lead-free finish. The exposed die pad on the bottom is the GND connection and the primary thermal path - it must be soldered to a board copper pour (with thermal vias) for both electrical ground and heat removal. Keep the SW/BOOST switching loop and the catch diode tight, place the input capacitor close to VIN, and keep the FB divider near the FB pin. Package dimensions and pin-1 orientation are shown below.
📄 Full specifications are detailed in the official ADI/Linear LT1936 datasheet.
Pin and Signal Definition
The 8-lead MSOP-EP brings out the power, switching and control pins (see the package drawing below for the exact pin numbering):
- VIN: Input supply, 3.6 V to 36 V.
- SW: Switch node - connect the inductor and catch diode here.
- BOOST: Bootstrap pin for the internal switch gate drive (boost capacitor to SW).
- GND / EP: Ground; the exposed pad is GND and the thermal path, solder to the board.
- FB: Feedback input - sets the output via an external divider to the 1.2 V reference.
- VC: Error-amplifier output / loop-compensation node.
- SHDN: Active-low shutdown (low-current off state); also sets undervoltage lockout.
Refer to the package drawing below for the physical pin numbering of the 8-lead MSOP-EP.

Applications

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the LT1936EMS8E#PBF do?
It is a monolithic step-down (buck) DC/DC regulator: it converts a 3.6-36 V input to a regulated output up to 1.4 A at a fixed 500 kHz, with current-mode control, output adjustable down to 1.2 V, in an 8-lead MSOP with exposed pad.
What input and output can it handle?
Input 3.6 V to 36 V, output adjustable from the 1.2 V reference up toward the input, at up to 1.4 A. It suits 12 V/24 V down to 5 V/3.3 V conversions.
Do I need to solder the exposed pad?
Yes. The MS8E exposed pad is the ground connection and main thermal path - solder it to a copper pour with vias for proper grounding and heat removal.
What switching frequency does it use?
A fixed 500 kHz internal oscillator, which keeps the external inductor and capacitors small while staying above the AM broadcast band.
