IR3500A - Infineon XPhase3 Multiphase VR Control IC (Intel VR11 / AMD PVID, 32-MLPQ) | Ordering Code: 111-4043PBF
IR3500A (in-fortune ordering code 111-4043PBF) is an XPhase3 multiphase control IC from Infineon (originally an International Rectifier device), providing system-level control for an Intel VR11 or AMD PVID processor voltage regulator built from one control IC and any number of matching phase ICs, with 0.5% setpoint accuracy, a programmable daisy-chain phase clock, dynamic VID, programmable load line, a 30MHz error amplifier, and full protection (over-current, central OVP, VRHOT, open-sense and open-loop detection), in a thermally enhanced 32-lead 5mm x 5mm MLPQ package.
Product Introduction
IR3500A is the control IC of Infineon's XPhase3 distributed multiphase architecture. Rather than driving the power MOSFETs itself, it manages the whole regulator and talks to any number of XPhase3 phase ICs, each of which drives and monitors a single phase of a multiphase buck converter. This split lets a high-current processor voltage regulator scale simply by adding phases, while one IR3500A holds the voltage setpoint, the load line and all the protection. The result is a CPU or ASIC power supply that is smaller, cheaper and easier to lay out than a monolithic multiphase controller, because the gate drive and current sense move out to the phase ICs next to each inductor.
The output voltage is commanded by an 8-bit VID code, and a VID-select pin configures the part for Intel VR11 or for AMD 5-bit or 6-bit PVID, including the start-up to a 1.1V boot voltage. A true differential remote-sense amplifier measures the voltage right at the load with under 50µA of bias current, and the overall system setpoint accuracy is 0.5%. Dynamic VID transitions, the load-line (droop) impedance and the VID offset are all programmable, so the regulator can be tuned to the processor's power-delivery specification without changing the silicon.
A daisy-chain digital phase-timing clock, programmable from 250kHz to 9MHz, sets a per-phase switching frequency of 250kHz to 1.5MHz with no external timing components, and it interleaves the phases automatically. Protection is comprehensive: a programmable converter current limit with hiccup, central over-voltage detection that both signals the system and commands the phase ICs, an IC bias linear-regulator controller with its own UVLO, a programmable VRHOT thermal flag driven from an NTC thermistor on the power stage, and detection of an open remote-sense line or an open control loop. The device is supplied in a 32-lead 5mm x 5mm MLPQ, RoHS compliant.
Expert Technical Insight
Why split a processor VR into a control IC plus phase ICs, and what stays the designer's job with IR3500A?
- Distributing the phases tames layout and scaling: A monolithic 6-phase controller routes six gate drives and six current senses back to one package, which is a layout and noise problem at hundreds of amps. XPhase3 puts a phase IC at each inductor and links them to IR3500A over a simple multi-wire bus, so a 3-phase and a 6-phase design use the same control IC and differ only in how many phase ICs are populated. The designer chooses the phase count for the current, not a different part.
- The control IC owns accuracy and the load line, the phase IC owns the power: IR3500A sets the 0.5% setpoint, the dynamic VID slew and the programmable droop impedance, and it senses the output remotely at the socket. The per-phase current balancing and MOSFET drive live in the phase IC. That division is what lets the regulator meet a tight VR11 or PVID load-line specification while the high-current work happens next to the inductors.
- Protection is centralised for a reason: On a processor rail a fault has to be caught fast and consistently across every phase. IR3500A runs the current limit, the central over-voltage detection and the VRHOT thermal flag in one place and broadcasts them to the phase ICs, rather than letting each phase decide independently. Open remote-sense and open-loop detection guard against the failure modes that would otherwise drive the core voltage to a damaging level.
Key Benefits
One IR3500A controls any number of XPhase3 phase ICs over a simple bus, so a regulator scales from a few phases to many by populating phase ICs, with no change to the control IC.
A VID-select pin configures Intel VR11 or AMD 5-/6-bit PVID, and a true remote-sense amplifier holds the overall system setpoint to 0.5% at the load.
Programmable load-line impedance, dynamic VID slew rate and VID offset let one part meet different processor power-delivery specs without a silicon change.
Programmable current limit with hiccup, central over-voltage detection, VRHOT thermal flag from an NTC, plus open remote-sense and open-loop detection, all coordinated across the phases.

Package Information
IR3500A under ordering code 111-4043PBF is supplied in a thermally enhanced 32-lead MLPQ (Power Quad Leadless) package with a 5mm x 5mm body and an exposed thermal pad, with a typical junction-to-ambient thermal resistance of 28°C/W and a junction-to-case figure of 2°C/W. The leadless QFN-style outline keeps the high-pin-count control IC compact next to the processor socket, and the "PbF" suffix marks the lead-free (RoHS) finish. The reel ordering option is IR3500AMTRPBF.

Selection Tips: Choose IR3500A with matching XPhase3 phase ICs (such as IR3505) for a scalable, high-current Intel VR11 or AMD PVID processor rail. A monolithic controller such as ISL6336A suits a fixed phase count, while an integrated regulator (IR38060M) or a single-phase controller (IRU3037A) fits the lower-current auxiliary rails around the processor.
Manufacturer Information
Infineon Technologies AG, headquartered in Neubiberg, Germany, is a leading supplier of power semiconductors and power-management ICs. The IR3500A and the XPhase3 architecture originate with International Rectifier, the power-conversion pioneer that Infineon acquired in 2015, and they sit within Infineon's multiphase digital and analog voltage-regulator portfolio for computing and server processors.
IR3500A is a legacy IR control IC for Intel VR11 and AMD PVID processor power. Infineon supplies the companion XPhase3 phase ICs and the high-current power MOSFETs that complete the regulator, giving a single-vendor path from the control IC to the power stage of a processor voltage regulator.
Applications

Frequently Asked Questions
Does IR3500A drive the power MOSFETs directly?
No. IR3500A is the control IC of the XPhase3 architecture; it manages the regulator and communicates over a bus with separate phase ICs, and each phase IC drives and monitors one phase. The gate drive and per-phase current sense live in the phase IC, not in IR3500A.
Which VID standards does IR3500A support?
A VID-select pin configures the part for Intel VR11 or for AMD 5-bit or 6-bit PVID, including start-up to a 1.1V boot voltage. The output is commanded by an 8-bit VID code and held to a 0.5% overall system setpoint by the true remote-sense amplifier.
How many phases can IR3500A control?
From one to many: the architecture is 1-to-X phase, and the regulator scales by populating more XPhase3 phase ICs on the daisy-chain timing bus. One IR3500A and the same layout serve different phase counts, so the design changes only by how many phase ICs are fitted.
What phase IC pairs with IR3500A?
A matching XPhase3 phase IC such as IR3505, which drives the high- and low-side MOSFETs of one phase and reports its current back to the control IC. Confirm the exact phase-IC part and revision against the IR3500A datasheet and the target processor's power-delivery specification.
