DS1233Z-5+T&R - Maxim/Dallas DS1233 5V EconoReset, 4.62V Reset IC (5% grade), Pushbutton, SOT-223 | DS1233
DS1233Z-5+T&R is the lead-free, tape-and-reel, SOT-223 version of the Dallas/Maxim DS1233 EconoReset in the tighter 5%-tolerance grade. The "-5" suffix sets a 4.62 V reset trip (4.50 V to 4.74 V) for a 5 V rail - a narrower window than the 10% "-10" - asserting the active-low /RST below that point and holding it 350 ms after VCC recovers. It debounces an optional reset pushbutton, needs no external parts and draws under 50 µA, for 5 V microprocessor boards, computers, controllers and instruments that need a precise reset threshold.
Product Introduction
The DS1233 from Dallas Semiconductor (now Analog Devices via Maxim) is the 5 V single-chip EconoReset; the "-5" grade is its tight 5%-tolerance option. DS1233Z-5+T&R is the SOT-223 surface-mount package on tape and reel. Like the rest of the family it folds the reference, comparator and reset timer into one three-terminal part, but the "-5" is chosen where the reset point must track a 5 V rail closely.
The function is the 5 V power-on and brownout reset, set to a 4.62 V trip (4.50 V min / 4.74 V max). Because the 5% window sits higher and tighter than the 10% grade's 4.375 V, the processor is held in reset until the 5 V rail is very close to nominal - useful for parts whose minimum operating voltage leaves little margin. The active-low /RST stays asserted below the trip and for a further 350 ms (250 ms to 450 ms) after VCC returns, then releases. The output is open-drain with an internal 5 kΩ pull-up.
As with every EconoReset, the DS1233 also debounces a reset pushbutton tied to its reset node, re-timing the 350 ms pulse so a manual press is clean. The reference is temperature-compensated from -40 to +85 °C at under 50 µA, and the basic reset needs no external components. The same die is available in a through-hole TO-92.
Expert Technical Insight
When do you pick the 5% "-5" grade over the 10% "-10"?
- Tighter trip, higher floor: the "-5" trips at 4.62 V versus 4.375 V for the "-10". Choose it when the CPU's guaranteed minimum is near 4.5 V and you want reset to assert before the rail sags into the marginal zone.
- Same wiring, same pinout: /RST is open-drain with the 5 kΩ pull-up; tie it straight to the processor reset and wire-OR other sources if needed. Only the trip voltage differs from the "-10".
- Pushbutton stays free: as with the whole family, route a front-panel button to the reset node and the chip debounces it - no discrete RC needed regardless of the grade.
Key Benefits
The tight 5% grade asserts /RST below 4.62 V, a higher and narrower window than the 10% part.
Reference, sensor and 5 kΩ pull-up integrated - a complete reset in one SOT-223.
Open-drain /RST wire-ORs cleanly, and an external reset button is debounced on-chip.
Holds reset 350 ms after VCC recovers, at under 50 µA over -40 to +85 °C.

Package Information
DS1233Z-5+T&R is supplied in the surface-mount SOT-223 (the "Z" denotes the SOT-223; the tab and lead 4 are GND); "+" marks the RoHS-compliant lead-free finish and "T&R" the tape-and-reel packing. The same DS1233 die is also offered in a through-hole TO-92. Place the device near the processor reset pin, route /RST to the reset input, and add the optional 100 pF-0.01 µF debounce cap from the reset node to GND when a pushbutton is used. Package dimensions and pin-1 orientation are shown below.
📄 Full specifications are detailed in the official Dallas/Maxim DS1233 datasheet.
Pin and Signal Definition
The SOT-223 brings out the supply, reset and ground:
- Pin 1 - GND: Ground (the large tab).
- Pin 2 - /RST: Reset output, active low, open drain (internal 5 kΩ pull-up).
- Pin 3 - VCC: +5 V supply (monitored against the 4.62 V trip).
- Pin 4 - GND: Ground (SOT-223 lead, common with the tab).
Refer to the package drawing below for the physical pin numbering of the SOT-223.
Alternative and Related Parts
The parts below are related Dallas/Maxim reset and supervisory ICs in our catalog. They are not all drop-in replacements; verify the trip voltage, output type and pinout before substituting.
| Part Number | Brand | Type / Key Difference | Package | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DS1233Z-10 | Maxim/Dallas | EconoReset, 5 V, 10% (4.375 V) | SOT-223 | Wider 10% window |
| DS1233AZ-10 | Maxim/Dallas | EconoReset, 3.3 V (2.88 V) | SOT-223 | 3.3 V version |
| DS1233D-10 | Maxim/Dallas | EconoReset, push-pull /RST | SOT-223/TO-92 | Push-pull output variant |
| DS1813-10 | Maxim/Dallas | EconoReset with pushbutton | SOT-223/TO-92 | Related reset family |
| MAX809HTR | Maxim | Simple reset IC, 4.63 V | SOT-23-3 | Tiny 3-pin reset |
Selection Tips: Use the DS1233-5 (4.62 V, 5%) when a 5 V rail needs a tight, higher reset threshold; the DS1233-10 (4.375 V, 10%) gives a wider window, and the DS1233A covers 3.3 V. The DS1233D swaps to a push-pull output. For the smallest footprint the 3-pin MAX809 in SOT-23 is an alternative with a similar 4.63 V trip.
Manufacturer Information
Dallas Semiconductor, now part of Analog Devices through Maxim Integrated, introduced the EconoReset line that turned the microprocessor power-on reset into a single low-cost chip. The DS1233 5 V part is offered in 5% and 10% trip grades; the "-5" suits designs that need the tighter, higher threshold.
The device is backed by full datasheet characterization and application notes on trip grades, pushbutton wiring and open-drain reset connection - the details that decide whether a 5 V system powers up and recovers cleanly.
Applications

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the DS1233Z-5+T&R do?
It is the 5%-grade 5 V EconoReset reset IC: it asserts an open-drain active-low /RST below the 4.62 V trip, holds it 350 ms after VCC recovers, and debounces a reset pushbutton, with no external components in a SOT-223.
How does "-5" differ from "-10"?
Both are 5 V parts. The "-5" is the 5% grade with a 4.62 V trip (4.50-4.74 V); the "-10" is the 10% grade with a lower 4.375 V trip. Pick "-5" for a tighter, higher reset point.
Is the reset output open-drain?
Yes. /RST is active-low open-drain with an internal 5 kΩ pull-up, so it can wire-OR with other reset sources. VOL is under 0.4 V at 8 mA.
How is the SOT-223 pinned out?
Pin 1 (tab) and pin 4 are GND, pin 2 is /RST (active low), and pin 3 is VCC (+5 V). /RST stays low until VCC has been in tolerance for 350 ms.
